What Our Clients Say

Care For Your New Lawn

The first two weeks are crucial to your lawn’s long-term success. At Top Notch Turf, we recommend a few simple steps to help your turf establish properly.

Water regularly during the first one to two weeks, keeping the soil consistently moist so the roots can grow strong. After around three weeks the turf should have knitted together, but keep checking and water when needed, especially in warm or windy weather.

Hold off on mowing until the grass reaches about 6 cm high. Set your mower no lower than 4 cm for the first cut and follow-up mows. You can fertilise after six weeks, then finish with a deep watering to help the nutrients soak in.

  • Why are the first two weeks after laying turf so important?

The first fortnight is when your turf starts building its root system into the soil. If it dries out or gets stressed early, it can struggle to establish properly. Keeping conditions steady during this time helps the lawn knit together and grow evenly. A strong start sets you up for a healthier, longer-lasting lawn.

  • How often should we water new turf?

Water regularly for the first one to two weeks so the soil stays moist, not soggy. This supports root growth and prevents the turf from shrinking or lifting. After about three weeks, the lawn should be knitting together, but you still need to watch conditions and water as required. Hot, windy days may mean extra watering, while cooler weather needs less.

  • When can we mow and fertilise a new lawn?

Wait until the grass reaches roughly 6 cm before the first mow. Set the mower height to no lower than 4 cm to avoid scalping and stressing the turf. You can fertilise after six weeks, once the roots have settled in well. Always follow fertilising with a deep watering to help the nutrients reach the root zone.
