Popular Fast-Growing Buffalo
At Top Notch Turf, we’re proud to grow and supply Sir Walter Buffalo turf in Townsville. This premium variety offers excellent versatility, growing well in both clay and sandy soils while staying resilient through dry periods. It is also frost-hardy, so it can handle cooler winter conditions without losing its strength or colour.
Sir Walter Buffalo performs well in shade, needing only two to three hours of full sun each day, which makes it a great alternative to Wintergreen Couch in mixed-light yards. It is easy to care for, requiring regular mowing, the occasional deep water and a simple once-a-year fertilise. We especially recommend it for front and backyards that experience heavy foot traffic. What Our Clients Say
Caring for Sir Walter
Sir Walter Buffalo Turf is a very durable grass with a vigorous root system, which means it will put up with a lot of wear. If you give Sir Walter a little love and attention it will reward you with a lush-looking lawn that will stay lovely for years to come.
Once your grass is established, regular mowing is essential. For a soft feel underfoot, set your mower to 50mm; for a firmer footing reduce the deck height to 30mm.
To encourage a vigorous root system, water deeply every so often. If your grass is not as green as you’d expect after mowing and watering, then consider applying fertiliser with an iron supplement in late autumn.
What conditions does Sir Walter Buffalo handle best?
Sir Walter Buffalo is very adaptable and grows well in both clay and sandy soils. It stays strong through dry weather thanks to its drought resistance. It is also frost-hardy, so it can cope with cooler areas or winter cold snaps. This makes it a reliable option across a wide range of yard types.
How much sunlight does Sir Walter Buffalo need?
Sir Walter Buffalo performs well in shade compared with many other turf types. It only needs about two to three hours of full sun per day to remain healthy. That makes it ideal for yards with trees, fences or buildings that block light. With a bit of daily sun, it keeps good density and colour.
How do we look after Sir Walter Buffalo once it’s laid?
Sir Walter Buffalo is easy to maintain and suits busy households. We suggest regular mowing to keep it tidy and encourage thick growth. Give it an occasional deep water, especially during hot dry stretches, rather than frequent light watering. A once-a-year fertilise is usually enough to keep it looking lush and handling foot traffic well.
