Tahoma 31® for Versatility

We’re proud to supply and lay Tahoma 31®, one of the latest hybrid couch grasses at Top Notch Turf in Townsville.

Arriving in Australia in 2020, Tahoma 31® is an incredibly drought-hardy turf featuring a dark green, fine leaf that has proven popular with golf course greenkeepers overseas for its colour and durability.

Ideal for coastal conditions, this turf is also salt resistant and requires far less mowing, watering and general maintenance than other grasses.

Unlike Wintergreen Couch, Tahoma 31® will also tolerate a greater degree of shade – up to a 63% reduction in sunlight.

What Our Clients Say

Tahoma 31® Turf: Growing in Popularity

One of the reasons Tahoma 31® Turf is taking off is its ability to cope with a wide range of conditions while requiring minimal maintenance.

Developed by the University of Oklahoma, Tahoma 31® extensively tested across different temperatures and soil conditions across the United States, consistently performing well – particularly for salt and shade tolerance.

Thanks to its deep green colour, it’s an attractive addition to any home, sports field, or commercial premises.

  • What makes Tahoma 31 different from other couch grasses?

Tahoma 31 is a hybrid couch bred for exceptional toughness in hot, dry conditions. It has a dark green colour and a fine leaf that gives a premium, manicured look. Compared with many other couches, it needs less mowing, watering and general upkeep once established. That mix of performance and appearance is why it is widely used on high-end sporting surfaces overseas.

  • Is Tahoma 31 suitable for coastal lawns and salty environments?

Yes, Tahoma 31 performs really well in coastal areas because it has strong salt resistance. Its roots and leaf structure cope better with sea spray and slightly saline soils than many common lawn types. You still need good drainage and sensible irrigation during establishment. After that, it holds colour and density with relatively low maintenance.

  • How much shade can Tahoma 31 handle?

Tahoma 31 tolerates partial shade better than most couch varieties. It can manage up to about a 63 percent reduction in sunlight, which is a big advantage for yards with trees or nearby buildings. You will get the best results with a few hours of filtered or direct light each day. In heavy, constant shade, growth will slow and the turf may thin, so trimming overhead cover helps.
